Brenau University welcomes the
awarding-winning poet Robert Dana - State of Iowa Poet Laureate - for a
free and open-to-the-public reading at noon, Friday, April 8, in Banks
Recital Hall, John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts, on Academy
Street. A 1 p.m. workshop follows, also in Banks Recital Hall. Born
in Boston, after serving in the South Pacific at the end of World War
II, Dana moved to Iowa where he attended Drake University and The
University of Iowa Writers' Workshop.
His poetry has won numerous awards,
including two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships and the
Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award from New York University. Retired from
teaching after 40 years as Poet-in-Residence at Cornell College, he also
served as Distinguished Visiting Writer at Stockholm University. He has
published 10 collections of poetry including his most recent work "The
Morning of the Red Admirals" in 2004.
The Georgia Poetry Circuit is a
consortium of colleges and universities around the state that pool their
resources in order to bring nationally known poets for readings and
workshops to Georgia campuses. Sponsored by Brenau University, the
Circuit also receives grants from the Georgia Council for the Arts and
the National Endowment for the Arts.
