Work to rebuild Brenau University's Crow's Nest, a familiar
structure on the front campus lawn and one that plays an historic role in
Women's College students' progress to graduation, recently began - thanks
to the support of Brenau's many alumnae.
Last year, after weathering storms, tornadoes, arson and
the weight of hundreds of Brenau women over the years, the century-old
structure was condemned and, it was believed lost.
But the university's many graduates, who couldn't
imagine their alma mater without the Crow's Nest, stepped in. So far, more
than $8,500 has been raised towards the $10,000 project, which
Gainesville-based Tri-H Construction Company plans to finish in time for
this year's Alumni Reunion Weekend and May Day ceremonies, April 15-16.
Built around the base of an old oak tree, the first
Crow's Nest was given to Brenau by the Class of 1905. Somewhere along the
way, a tradition developed that only seniors were allowed up in the
hallowed and lofty heights of its balustraded balcony - while juniors can
only go so far as to stand on the first step; sophomores may venture to
stand on the steps around the large platform at the base and the freshmen
- well, the freshmen just get to stand on the concrete base that surrounds
it all. |
