Brenau Academy Graduates Receive Awards, Recognition

Brenau Academy, Georgia's only all-girls boarding school, graduated 10 seniors with end-of-year honors and awards at a recent commencement ceremony held in Brenau University's Pearce Auditorium.

Brenau Academy's Class of 2005:

  • Amanda Uche Atunzu of Marietta, Ga., graduated with the U.S. President's Award for Educational Improvement. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eddy Atunzu.

  • Sara Marie Black of Jacksonville, Fla. and the daughter of Mrs. Greta Crossfield graduated.

  • Joanna Cameron Cone of Pickens, S.C., was the 2005 Salutatorian. She delivered the Salutatorian's welcoming speech at Graduation and graduated with the Dean's Award of the Year. She also was awarded the U.S. President's Award for Educational Excellence; Student Government Leadership Award and the Academic Area Runner-Up medal for History. She is the daughter of Jan Dulin.

  • Laura Michelle Helm of New Orleans, La., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Helm graduated.

  • Sara Elizabeth Hertwig of Atlanta, Ga., graduated with the Academic Area Runner-Up medal for English. She is the daughter of Mr. Curtis Hertwig.

  • Amanda F. Hunter of Sandys, Bermuda, graduated with the C.B Branham Award, along with the Student Award for Excellence. In addition she was awarded the Best Student Awards in English and History; was Intramural Athlete of the Year; received the Georgia Secretary of State's Excellence in Citizenship Award and achieved Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary W. Hunter.
  • Kristin Campbell Kempton of Harvard, Mass. and the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Robert M. Kempton graduated.

  •  Mi Hyeon Lee of Seongnam City Kyunggido, South Korea received first place for the Metamorphosis Poetry Award and the U.S Presidents Award for Educational Excellence. In addition she is also on the Dean's List. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Duck-Woo Lee.

  • Natalia Maria Montalvo of Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., graduated with the second place Metamorphosis Poetry Award. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Armando Montalvo.

  • Ji Eun Park of Buford, Ga. was 2005 Valedictorian and delivered the valedictorian's farewell speech at Graduation. She is also on the Dean's List. She is the niece of Mr. Stephen Yoon.

  Founded in 1928 on the campus of Brenau College by Dr. H. J. Pearce, Brenau Academy was established to provide high-quality secondary education for young women. Brenau Academy's program is designed to foster the growth of an open and inquiring mind and to prepare graduates for admission to college.

The purpose of Brenau Academy is implemented by means of small classes that allow for individual attention. The small student body provides greater opportunity for leadership experiences. Because of Brenau University's proximity, its facilities, faculty members, and cultural programs are available to Academy students.

Brenau Academy is accredited by the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools  (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097: Telephone number 404-679-4501) to award secondary diplomas.  The school is also approved by the Georgia Department of Education, and a member of the Georgia Independent School Association, the National Association of Independent Schools, and the National Association of Boarding Schools.
