Brenau University annually celebrates the
Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with a formal convocation and holiday. The
convocation program is organized by the Silhouettes, a campus club that
promotes understanding and acceptance of diversity issues. This year, rather than a speaker, the
Silhouettes chose to have the words of Dr. King take center stage,
accompanied by a celebration of song.
Faculty and staff were tapped to read the
“I Have a Dream” speech from the 1963 march on Washington, D.C. Three
students then read a 1956 speech that exhorted listeners to achieve
excellence.
“What Dr. King had to say is so relevant to
us today,” said many of the students as they left historic Pearce
Auditorium. |

Presentations of gospel music were performed
by the Brenau Chamber Choir, Brenau’s Belle Voce, dramatic soloist Keena
Redding Hunt and Dr. Oral Moses, professor of voice and music literature
at Kennesaw State University. Moses received a standing ovation after his
moving bass-baritone rendition of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”
and “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel.”
Silhouettes president Aileen Perez, who
served as emcee, encouraged the packed audience to “cherish the powerful
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”
