Brenau Women's College senior biology major
Jessica Herrera is one of only 15 students from across the United States
chosen to participate in the prestigious Barbara Jordan Health Policy
Scholars Program at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Herrera's
expenses, plus a stipend will be paid by the Kaiser Foundation. A commuter
student from Habersham County - who plans to attend medical school to
become a physician after graduating from Brenau - Herrera says she is
excited about opportunity to study and work in Washington. "I feel very
privileged to have been chosen ... It will be a great learning experience
that will help enhance my experience as a future health professional," she
said. Scholars work in congressional offices, learning federal legislative
procedure and health policy issues, while honing their critical thinking
and leadership skills during the May 24-July 29, nine-week program. The
Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation established the Barbara Jordan Health
Policy Scholars Program at Howard University to honor the legacy of former
Foundation Trustee and Congresswoman Barbara Jordan and to expand the pool
of students of color interested in the field of health policy. The
Scholars Program targets talented Latino, African American, Asian/Pacific
Islander and American Indian/Alaska Native college seniors and recent
graduates. |
