Brenau Online Joins Katrina Aid “Sloan Semester”
Brenau University announced today that it will participate in the “Sloan Semester,” an organized effort in the higher education community coordinating 150 regionally accredited colleges and universities’ resources to address the needs of college students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Students from coastal schools that have closed their campuses for the fall term due to hurricane damage may register for online classes during the fall semester at one or more of the participating institutions. The institutions waive tuition for these students, and the tuition paid to their home institutions for this semester will remain with those schools. Professors teaching these courses will be paid by the Sloan Foundation.

At Brenau University, general questions should be directed to Heather Gibbons, Ph.D., director of the Online College at 800.252.5119 or locally at 770.718.5328 or by email at http://online.brenau.edu.

The effort, spearheaded by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), the Sloan Consortium and Sloan Foundation, aims to bridge the gap by offering students "free" tuition this fall at participating institutions that offer online courses to keep them on track with their studies until they are able to return to their home institutions in the spring semester. These groups have established processes for students to review and pursue their course options and for institutions to contribute in the form of online classes or other resources.

This opportunity provides affected students the time and flexibility to get their personal lives back together, and the geographical freedom to not attend campus-based classes in an institution far from where they intended. The courses offered by Brenau University through this initiative are completely online, and will begin Oct. 19. with regularly scheduled online courses at Brenau.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by this disaster,” stated Heather Gibbons, Ph.D., Brenau’s Online College Director.
