Brenau University's annual senior thesis dance concert "On
the Brink" will take you right to the edge - of your seats, that is - 8
p.m., April 15 and 16 in Brenau University's
Hosch
Theatre at the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts on
Academy Street. The stunning visual performance includes choreography by
Brenau dance majors Sarah Embrose, Kris Megahee, Vanessa Otterbourg and
Ashley Yarborough; a ballet suite set by program director Carol Smiarowski
and guest musicians. Created works range in style from tap, to ballet, to
modern and Irish dancing, while encompassing a variety of music sources
from live or recorded, to a capella. |
Embrose's ballet, "Beauty in the Midst of Madness,"
explores the contrasting qualities between the ethereal aesthetic of
ballet against the eerie and static sounds of composer Merzbow.
"War's Widow," choreographed by Megahee, features live
string accompaniment and tells the tale of a young wife's isolation and
depression as her soldier husband leaves to serve in the Civil War.
Otterbourg's "Industrial" explores the impact the
Industrial Revolution had on personal relationships, focusing on the
changes in nature and interpersonal communication in a world of concrete,
steel, and cellular phones. "Snap" is a jovial reflection of a dancer's
daily life.
Choreographer Yarborough utilizes the feisty popping of
a Theraband - a rubber band used in physical therapy and conditioning
exercises - as the baseline rhythm displayed throughout the piece.
General admission $5; seniors, students with ID and
children: $3. Free to Brenau University faculty, staff and students.
Tickets available at the door. For more information call 770.538.4757.
