Status requirements

Enrollment Status

An undergraduate student enrolled for at least six (6) semester hours but fewer than twelve (12) semester hours is considered a half-time student, while an undergraduate student enrolled for twelve (12) semester hours is considered full-time. A student enrolled in a teacher certification program is considered an undergraduate student for financial aid eligibility purposes.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

In order to comply with the standards of satisfactory academic progress mandated by the U.S. Department of Education, an undergraduate student seeking financial aid must satisfy the following requirements:

  • The student must earn a minimum 2.0 grade point average in the course work attempted in any semester.
  • The student must complete with passing grades (A, B, C, D) at least 67% of the credit hours attempted in any semester.

By the end of each academic year, the full-time student must earn the minimum number of credit hours (excluding repeats) as outlined below:

Total required for degree

Full-time students will be allowed six academic years of financial aid eligibility to complete a bachelor's degree. Students enrolled less than full-time will be given a proportionally longer period of time to complete a bachelor's degree.

In the event a student fails to meet either of the above criteria in any given semester, (s)he will be placed on financial aid probation for a period of one semester. During the probationary semester the student must enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours and earn a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Any student who fails to meet these minimum requirements will not be making satisfactory academic progress and financial aid will be suspended or terminated.

In addition to the above requirements, a student who is receiving financial aid must earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 after two years of enrollment at Brenau University. Any student who fails to meet this requirement will have all financial aid suspended without the benefit of a probationary semester.

When financial aid is suspended,
a student may appeal this status through the following procedure:
  • The student must indicate in writing to the Director of Financial Aid the reasons why satisfactory academic progress was not maintained.
  • The director of financial aid will present the appeal to the Financial Aid Committee for review and a decision will be made regarding whether or not suspension will be enforced.
  • The student will be notified of the decision in writing.
  • If the student's financial aid suspension is upheld by the committee, the student must complete a minimum of 6 credit hours with a 2.0 grade point average at Brenau University or be eligible to transfer a minimum of 6 credit hours with a 2.0 grade point average back to Brenau University from another institution. The student must also reapply in writing and meet all eligibility requirements to receive financial aid for the following semester.
