State Aid

General Regulations. In order to receive state financial aid (with the exception of the HOPE Scholarship), a student must be a legal resident of Georgia for a minimum of twelve months and must enroll full-time for grants and at least half-time for loans. Satisfactory academic progress must be maintained. General Tuition Equalization Grant. The purpose of this grant is to provide tuition assistance to Georgia residents who wish to pursue a degree at a private college or university within Georgia. Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree program. Students may apply by completing the Georgia Student Grant Application. The grant amount is $500 per semester.
HOPE Scholarship. A lottery-funded program, the HOPE Scholarship is available for students who graduated from an eligible Georgia high school in 1996 or later with a "B" average. Other students may be eligible for the HOPE Scholarship if they meet specific Georgia residency requirements and earn a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at 30 or 60 attempted semester hours. Eligible students will receive up to $1,500 per semester as long as they maintain a 3.0 grade point average and enroll as full-time students. A student who has earned a previous bachelor's degree or who has attempted more than 127 semester hours is not eligible for the HOPE Scholarship. Students who wish to be considered for the HOPE Scholarship must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or the HOPE Alternate Application.
PROMISE Teacher Scholarship. This program provides forgivable loans to high achieving students who wish to teach in Georgia public schools. Applicants must have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.6 and must be classified as juniors who have been accepted for enrollment into a teacher education program. The PROMISE program provides $3,000 per academic year for two years. One year of qualified teaching service will cancel $1,500 of the award. Eligible students must complete the PROMISE Scholarship application.
State Direct Student Loan. The State of Georgia provides loan funds that may be canceled for service in critical fields where shortages exist within the state. Brenau University students majoring in nursing and occupational therapy are eligible to apply at the junior and senior levels. Funds are limited and the maximum annual loan amount is $2,000. These loans fall under the guidelines of the Federal Stafford Loan program and eligibility is determined by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
